~~~ Thread-oh Meadow ~~~
08/28/09
A MEADOW OF . . . MOLDED THREAD??
Indeed, that is what we have here.
A necklace whose bibbed base is a mass of tangled threads -- yes, I'm so obsessed, I collect thread scraps in their own drawer, aptly titled, "thread scraps."
These salvaged scraps were dipped in sculpting paste and hardeners, then hand-molded and formed.
It was then drilled through to wire in the vintage flower bursts and enamel butterfly and the little dingle dangles that adorn it throughout.
I do believe they call this kind of art a labor of love.
Three Cheers for JOEY!
08/26/09
How 'bout that Joey?
Ain't she cool?
Wears them jools that make 'em drool!
Put on a necklace,
Put on a ring,
Come on Joey, DO YOUR THING!
YEEHA!
Well, at least one cheer anyway --I don't know if I can remember three!! . . . and I think the words to the above one just changed a bit . . .
Joey and I used to be cheerleaders at Hermitage High School. Gooooo PANTHERS!
Recently Joey was in Anthill and for kicks she brought her cheering outfit from back in the day. It was so tiny!!
WHAT A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE! We weren't as big as a bump on a log. Heck! We weren't as big as a flea on a fly on a bump on a log!!
It was great fun seeing you, Joey! You haven't changed a bit!
Love your necklaces!!!
Great taste in schools and jools! YEEHA!!!
Can you pick us out??
Toilet Rose
08/24/09
Truly -- this is a pink rose from a 1950's crocheted toilet seat cover.
Can't you just picture the pink poodle skirt worn by the woman who crocheted it?
The faceted jade crystals bring it into the "now."
But the nostalgia of the rose keeps it awesomely "then."
SUMPTU-LISCIOUSNESS
08/14/09
This cup doesn't runneth over.
THIS CUP BUBBLETH OVER!
Lucite crystals - in frostyish/clear and pale blue - mix with GIANT pearls in a irresistible palette of SUMPTU-LISCIOUSNESS. (pronounced: sump-shoo-lish-us-ness).
Man it is fun making up words (it's actually easier for me than real words, and if you happen to know me, you indeed know I invent vocabulary as I go along).
And besides, a good-looking necklace is always a good reason for adding a new entry in the unabridged dictionary of jewelry slang --
Beauty? Check! Brains? Check!
08/12/09
If these two aren't the cutest I've ever seen, I don't know who might be.
Becca and her friend Sophie are classmates and both really love vintage jewelry.
I think it is so awesome when young people have an appreciation for the older jewelry -- something not only beautiful, but that has some history and significance.
It's such of world of instant gratification, wear it once and let it fall apart. Planned obsolescence -- 'cause there's two million more where "that" came from.
Not with vintage -- and these girls know that.
They'll learn more, they'll always have loads of fun treasure hunting, and they'll have a style ALL THEIR OWN --
So . . . how smart -- AND CUTE -- are they?!!! :)
Turned On It's Side
08/11/09
And a beautiful side it is.
A Victorian rhinestone collar pin (made to be worn horizontally) is ground smooth, turned on it's side, drilled and suspended from a gracefully linked silver chain.
Rebirth.
Lovely.
Carved Razor Blades?
08/10/09
Rhinestone-studded dressclip backs.
Cool.
They almost look like carved razor-blades to me.
Some are so much like little works of art -- and often engraved works of art -- it's a shame they were on the backside of the beautiful and elaborate rhinestone fur clips and dressclips from which they came.
All their sharp little gripper prongs (cleats) have been ground smooth, so you will have poke-free enjoyment.
I'm just glad they are so pretty . . . and unique . . . and odd . . . and edgy . . . and cool, because this necklace exists as a result of that completely unique beauty.
HAPPY 13 YEAR ANNIVERSARY ANTHILL!
Gorgeous Guilloche
08/07/09
5 vintage lockets. All handpainted. All on guilloche enamel.
Guilloche is a technique for etching metal, named after a French engineer, Guillot.
He invented a machine that could scratch fine patterns and designs on metallic surfaces.
Thus when powdered glass is placed on top of an etched (guilloched) design and fired -- turning it into enamel -- the pattern from underneath shows through.
We have had some INCREDIBLE examples of it at Anthill over the years -- it can be a breathtaking art form.
And so it is here. Soft, romantic and and quite simply lovely.
Betty Boop Ain't Got Nothing on YOU
08/02/09
LOOK! I made a digital painting of my friend Ann!!
Ain't it cute???
Here she's modeling her latest and greatest Kay necklaces -- glopped together as I encourage people to do!
It makes 'em look all wild and wooly, like umkempt hair -- then if you want to look refined, you can wear one at a time or even ONE ELEMENT at a time --
VERSATILITY BABY -- like VARIETY -- is the spice of life!! (not recommended in the spousal department, btw, if you prefer your marriage to last).
Thanks Annie -- but don't get your gun and shoot me. I think this picture is ADORABLE -- AND I think it should be your new facebook profile pic -- I'm just sayin'. . . .
